Wright Flyer Improvement

Project Report Presentation Slides
In this project, I worked with a partner to analyze the Wright brothers’ wing design and make changes to improve its performance. The new design increased the lift coefficient, increased lift to drag ratio, increased longitudinal stability and decreased planform area of the wing.

The changes that were made to achieve these improvements were to change the anhedral angle to a dihedral angle, decrease the taper ratio, increase the airfoil camber, and add winglets to the wingtips. Another change that was considered was to the root to tip sweep, but this was not implemented.

Through this project, I learned to use the XFLR5 software to analyze wing characteristics in flight.  I also learned how different wing characteristics affected the performance of a wing. Developing the improved Wright flyer design taught me how to make better informed decisions about wing structure design.
