For this project, I worked with a partner to analyze the Venus Intrepid Tessera Lander (VITaL) pressure vessel and determine potential materials and failure points of the lander. Our results determined that Ti64 would be the ideal material for the vessel with sapphire windows to allow for data collection. The likely points of failure would be due to corrosion, improper landing, or failure of the camera windows.

This project challenged me to conduct material selection and stress analysis in extreme environments for a complex system. This taught me how to make appropriate simplifications to help analyze complex systems. In this project, I applied my learnings of 3D stress-strain analysis. Additionally, as this lander was only conceptual, one of the challenges we faced was the lack of clear specifications for the vessel. Many specifications were incomplete, resulting in the scope of the project being adjusted throughout its duration. This taught me adaptability in changing the project as new information was found while maintaining on-time delivery.
